계룡산 정상인 천황봉(847m)을 중심으로 16개에 달하는 봉우리 사이에 약 10개의 계곡이 형성되어 있다. 산의 능선이 닭의 벼슬을 쓴 용의 모습과 닮아 계룡(鷄龍)으로 불리게 되었다고 한다. 계룡산은 산세가 아늑하면서도 변화무쌍하고 서울, 대전 등 대도시에서도 일일 탐방이 가능해 연중 탐방객의 발길이 끊이지 않는 곳이다. 풍수지리학적으로도 뛰어나 조선의 수도로도 거론되었으며 나라의 제사를 지내던 신성한 산이기도 하다.
